Personality Pulling Focus
Ok, the current version of Margiela isn’t what we’ve all grown up with. However there is one thing that unites both iterations of the brand; a strong personality.
Margiela 1:0 was cerebral, dark and surreal at times, essentially making clothes-for-clever-people. Margiela 2:0 is a much more flamboyant second act, shrouded in well observed historical references with a compelling narrative.
Both versions celebrated the imperfect, at times adopting a scrappy finesse that cuts through the polished, often sanitised veneer that many luxury brands choose today.
But scrappy doesn’t mean poorly constructed, it takes an equal amount of skill and vision to make something look intentionally undone without it looking home-spun.
Stores want brands with a point of view, not more stuff. I’ve been sourcing brands for 20+ years now, and when faced with a sea of meh, I can tell you that personality prevails. This is something I reiterate when supporting fashion businesses today who might be going through an identity crisis.
It’s great to see that even with the mighty merchandising heft of the OTB Group behind him, they have allowed John Galliano’s personality to pull focus, and I’m here for it.
