Celebrate The Small

Measures of a successful business can be deeply personal. Some are driven by a big, whopping financial gain, whilst others are motivated by the emotional connection you get when working within a small team.

Even with the current cooling off of the luxury market, there’s still so much emphasis put on the big five (LVMH, Kering, Richemont, Prada & Capri), so I thought it would be good to take a break and celebrate the small.

During my time as Buying Manager for Net-a-Porter, working at scale was sometimes the nemesis of the new, and partnering with small brands who offer one-off, limited edition or made-to-order products wasn’t always compatible when you’re throwing down 500 units per style.

Hermes built one of the world’s biggest luxury brands by essentially pissing customers off with impossible-to-get product. So no matter how infuriating it can be to miss out on an limited edition drop or wait for a made-to-order piece, it can result in a highly engaged customer which supports the theory that not all value is financial.

With this in mind, I thought I’d share some fantastic brands which are small but perfectly formed.
